I support all of you on this. I do the same thing. I'm a big one for talking to strangers (i.e. people I don't know yet) but it's not the same as random connections. It's different if the person says there is a link and indicates they want to develop a relationship.

I agree with you Louise - my policy too. I only link with people I know. But I go further. I don't even link with my ex colleagues if I don't rate them enough on a personal or character level...am I fussy? What do you think? It should be about their connections too that you want to make a use of...that's what LinkedIn is about.

Personally I agree - I have a policy that I won't link with anyone on LinkedIn until I know them. This seems to be fairly well received as I reply to invitations with the suggestion that we meet up before we link. I always want to ensure that my contacts know that anyone I have linked with is someone that I know.

What does anyone else think?

I recently had a request from an academic in London who I know nothing about. I don't know him from Adam and I'm just a bit reluctant to link up with him. Similarly I spotted the name of someone I had long lost touch with who was down as a contact of one of my contacts. I asked her where she knew him from and she had no idea. She knew nothing about him.

I feel this sort of thing devalues Linkedin or am I being overly picky?
